Planning a proposal to your significant other takes a lot of consideration; how, when and where are you going to do it are just some of the things to think about, as well as how to make it extra special and, of course, how to ensure it is a surprise! Having said that, it doesn’t necessarily need to be a big grand gesture; sometimes the simplest proposal can be the most beautiful. There are the obvious choices for when to ask the big question - Valentine’s Day, Christmas, New Years and of course, birthdays - all of which are popular times of year. Personally, I like the stories that happen on unexpected dates, or dates that are particularly special to the couple, but there’s never a bad time to tell someone that you want to marry them!

So, if you are in need of a little inspiration, I have collated some of my favourite engagement stories* that have been shared with me, to help you find the best way to propose to your partner… ‘We has just picked up the keys to our new house, and we were standing outside it, taking photos. He said he had a surprise for me and to wait there, whilst he ran into the house. He then called me to come through the front door, where he had placed a doormat saying ‘Will you marry me?’ and behind that he was down on one knee holding the ring!’

‘He booked a surprise trip to Venice, and only told me the night before (he’d even arranged for me to have time off work!), and whilst we were there, on a romantic gondola ride, he pulled out a ring and asked me to marry him! The trip was such a surprise, I definitely wasn’t expecting a proposal as well!’

‘He proposed to me at the end of the Harbour Arm in Folkestone. We had gone for a night away to one of the places we went when we first got together, he had booked a suite in a hotel and borrowed his dad’s Triumph Stag for the weekend! We had a drink in the champagne bar then headed up to look at the view out to sea and he got down on one knee and proposed!’

‘We were staying on a small riverboat which we do to escape quite often. One night he was acting really tense and he was bbq-ing dinner one minute and on his knee the next. After I said yes he rang my Dad who asked him if he was sure because I was a lot to take on...charming (thanks Dad!)’

‘He took me to a hotel for a belated birthday meal, and as we were leaving to go to dinner, I asked him if I looked ok. He said I did but something was missing and he pulled the ring box out of his pocket.’

‘My fiance proposed during a hike in the Atlas mountains in Morocco. He waited until we were having a picture taken in front of a waterfall and proposed as he pretended to assist me off of the boulder.’

‘When I came back home from late work, he prepared a wonderful roast dinner with really romantic red candles and the engagement ring placed on the table.’

‘We got engaged at the top of the O2 Arena at sunset. He was acting very strange and prompted me to look at the HSBC building, because in his words "it looked beautiful". I turned around wondering what on earth he was on about and he was down on one knee.’

‘I proposed summer last year on a glamping trip after nervously waited for it to get dark so we could put the romantic outdoor lights on!’

‘He booked a table at our favourite restaurant to celebrate our three year anniversary. After the meal he suggested going to the Blue Bell Hill viewing point to have a short walk (bearing in mind we were dressed up for dinner and I was wearing heels!) We went and sat on a bench and enjoyed the view. Before I knew it, he was down on one knee proposing to me. It was a a total shock and very romantic!’

‘We got engaged in Rome... we’d been exploring all day and he popped the question in Villa Borghese park. There was no one else around, the setting was beautiful and it was absolutely perfect!’

‘We were at home actually, the day after a sunny trip to Malta. It was just the two of us and he knew that's exactly how I'd want it to be. I'm quite a private person, so wouldn't have wanted it to happen in public. After I'd said yes, we spent the evening Facetiming loved ones and it was just such a perfect day!’
