Today marks ten years since my incredible husband, David, and I tied the knot, so I thought I would do an anniversary feature and share a bit about our wedding with you all.
We had the ceremony and reception at Salomons Estate in Tunbridge Wells, and were fortunate enough to have the ceremony on the steps outside in the sunshine. It had been cloudy and wet all week, so we weren’t expecting great weather; I was just hoping it would be dry enough for the 45 minute ceremony as I had my heart set on getting married outside. It turned out to be a beautiful day, albeit a bit windy, and some guests even got sunburnt!
Our wedding was relatively small, with only forty guests for the ceremony, and a further thirty or so for the evening reception. David's daughter and my sister were our Bridesmaids and David's son and my brother were the Best Men. We chose a purple colour scheme, with dark purples, lilacs and cream tones throughout our décor and flowers; the bridesmaids’ dresses were purple, whilst the groom had purple accessories and the groomsmen’s ties were lilac.
The speeches were a real highlight of the day, particularly my father's speech which was funny, embarrassing (well, it was for me!) and ultimately very heart-warming, with our Toastmaster commenting afterwards that it was the best speech he'd ever heard!
It was also a particularly special day, because it was my Nana's 75th birthday. Before we booked the wedding, I asked her if she would mind sharing her day with us, and she was so sweet and generous, saying she would love to. We couldn't let the day go without making a fuss of her, so I broke with tradition slightly by making a speech (not something I would ever normally willingly do!) explaining that it was her birthday, presenting her with my wedding bouquet and a special photobook I'd had made for her, and then getting everyone to raise a glass to her and sing 'Happy Birthday'. It was one of my most memorable parts of the day, and still means so much to me, as I hope it did her.
In the evening, we had our favourite local band, Marylebone Jelly, entertain us with a fantastic array of music, and they were utterly brilliant, as always. They even learnt our first dance song, Elvis' 'Can't help falling in love', especially for us and it was a beautiful rendition.
We had planned to have a big anniversary party this weekend to celebrate, and had even booked Marylebone Jelly to play, but this obviously had to be cancelled because of the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. Instead, we're going to have a quiet dinner for two at our village pub, which will be lovely, and a bit of a novelty being able to actually go to a restaurant and have a meal!
Who knows, maybe we'll have a big party for our fifteen year anniversary!
